Book Review- On Writing by Stephen King

The Stephen King book, On Writing, is the best resource that any new novelist can have to guide him or her along. I recommend getting a cheap copy at Amazon or getting the most recent edition of this worthwhile book anywhere that you can find one.

Writing a novel for the first time can be daunting. You don’t just have one page looking up at you; rather, you have over 200 of them asking for your attention and detail. You know that you want the book to mean something or to make some kind of contribution. But, you know that you cannot write it this way. You have to find fun and quirky characters first. You have to develop a setting and a plot. You have to become comfortable with writing something foreign to you, a novel and develop your own style both on the page and at your desk or computer.

King understands what a new writer goes through because he was one himself. He kept writing with little career success and a lot of rejection and was ready to give up but did not do so because of his adoring wife. If it were not for her, we would not have so many other books by this brilliant author. It was Carrie that was his breakthrough, and he did not care what people would think of this heroine, a girl with telepathic powers who was not beautiful or smart or anything special, but he wanted to tell a story around her lousy and miserable life situation anyway. So, he did. And, the rest is history.

King speaks of the much overrated adverb. He talks of a vehicle accident that nearly killed him. He mentions the importance of a writer to read a lot of books, which kind of goes without saying. He is very open and free in offering advice and makes it clear that writing a novel will be a tremendous challenge but a lot of fun.

This book, which goes way back but transcends time in relevance, is much recommended.

More About Me

Hi, my name is Joseph Joel, and I am a writer and a painter. The first task that I have is to tell you this fact: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ALL OF THE TITLES ABOVE ARE OF UPCOMING NOVELS THAT WILL BE SELF-PUBLISHED THROUGH AMAZON KINDLE. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW ANY OF THESE BOOKS ON A KINDLE OR YOUR REGULAR COMPUTER.

So, my author site will be a bit different because I will use my artwork as something to look at when you are not reading some samples of my work or my latest blog post. I like in Easton, Pennsylvania with my cat, Mitzi, and I just love to read a lot and listen to the happy sounds of the birds chirping outside. It is a quiet place, but for some reason, my favorite thing in the world is scary stories even though I grew up with John Irving, not Stephen King.

Today, however, Stephen King is my favorite author. So, you will read a lot about him in my posts. He is the best thing since cinnamon toast and Edgar Allen Poe, if you ask me.

In addition to writing and painting, I enjoy cooking, tennis, and making up bullshit stories, which may be why April’s Fool Day is my favorite holiday.

The books that I write vary from non-fiction to fiction. The non-fiction books speak often of weird names. These names are ones that they do have or should not have. You will learn more about what I mean when you read samples of my books. My fiction is dark and funny. Some of these books are short and one of them is long. All of them are a heck of a good time. I write for an audience, not to just entertain myself or enlarge my ego. I am a nice guy.

So, come along for the ride and enjoy. I am never boring.

Best,

Joseph Joel
